Weaving Along

WAL #1

i’m playing in my first WAL (Weave-Along) over on Weavolution with the backstrap weaving group. it has been an interesting and exciting learning experience. Lavern (our wonderful experienced teacher/cheerleader/organizer) is a wealth of knowledge and doesn’t complain about going over things repeatedly when we don’t quite get it.

the WAL is going in 2 parts. one is a more advanced group doing double weave pick up patterns (i’m reading along with interest and will try that later!!). the other group is for the more beginner backstrap weavers. there is a group of folks who just started putting together their looms and learning to weave on a backstrap. i’m working along with that group.

for this project, i didn’t use my rigid heddle. instead i learned to make string heddles.  in the photo at the bottom of this post, you can see the shed stick (pencil with 1 loop of yellow string holding the stick shed) and the heddle stick (pencil covered in loops of yellow sting each securing a single warp tread in the heddle shed) for warp faced weaving, the string heddles are much better! (but my rigid heddle will still be used a bunch. i love the soft plain weave fabric i wove with it. must make some scarves… )

the WAL project was stripes. we were given 3 options with instruction on how to warp for each: Vertical Stripes, Horizontal Stripes, or Combs. always determined to do things the hard way, i decided to plan out a pattern and warp up using all 3 methods at once.

WAL #1

this is where my “learning opportunities” began…  somehow in all my reading and talking to weavers…my brain just failed to register that you should tie the warp to the *warp* when starting and ending… not to the ruler i was using clamped to my desk as a warping peg. duh. i won’t make that mistake again. but, even worse than that… about half way through wrapping my warp, my rulers started to slip and the distance my warp was traveling got shorter and shorter as they pulled in. this meant that my warp was 1.not one continuous loop that could even out tension by itself and 2. very badly tensioned! ACK!!

ok, lesson learned. i chalked it up to learning experience and moved on. i put my lease sticks (two pencils) into the cross and secured them (rubber bands). feeling confident, i lifted the warp off the warping “pegs” and started to transfer it to my loom bars. ACK! i dropped it. Doh! Doh! Doh! ok, preserver!  i was so close to a beautiful warp and i was learning…. i slipped all the warp ends on the loom bars and strapped myself in…. and proceeded to spend the next hour and a half reordering the ends back the way they started.

Whew! ok, that done, i thought it would be smooth sailing… i got out my directions on how to reorder the warp threads for the horizontal stripes and combs. that went perfectly! that was the hard part right? i was feeling so proud of myself. i took a small break. checked the WAL group. patted my self on the back. and got out my instructions to start making string heddles. again, it went smoothly and came out perfect! i was really riding the high! this weaving thing was awesome! i still had the problem of uneven tension, but other than that, my warp was looking good. so, after another brief break, i strapped myself in again and started meticulously tugging on each warp thread to move the slack to the nearest knot and tighten it up.. until an hour later (back aching and very tired) there was even tension across the entire warp! huzzah!

deep calming sigh. now, all that lay in sight was to weave it up. all the patterning was already programed in… it was simple weaving. i took out my lease sticks and looked at it in a little bit on satisfied wonder.
just then, the phone rang… it was my mom. she had broken her arm (humerus) and was in a lot of pain. jumping up to talk to her, my toe caught in the warps and suddenly my shed stick was no longer secured my that little yellow string… or even in the warp at all!!! oh no!! in my stress and tired state, i believed this meant that all the work that had gone into it was lost and ruined. mom was more important, and i left the weaving sitting in corner for a week as i avoided thinking about my poor mess…

and then after a week of finishing projects due in on deadlines.. and as my mother’s arm got taken care of… suddenly, my mental fog cleared and i realized, THAT SHED WASN’T GONE! all i had to do was reverse the process i had used to make the string heddles… slipping my warps over the shed stick instead. duh. the heddles secured things in order. nothing was lost. nothing was defeated. i had just needed the mental break to clear out the garbage from my head and be ready for understanding to come.

the wonderful thing about that whole process though, was that with each miss step i got a much clearer picture of what was going on with the whole process and why things were important. if i had followed things to the letter and had no miss steps, i wouldn’t have learned as much.

onward to weaving… i’ve done 25″ so far. i still have 11″ of warp left, so i want to get a little farther… but it is getting much harder to open the sheds, so i decided to take a break. i am hoping to use this to make a good wide supportive backstrap for my loom…

2008 Christian Paper Artists Card Deck – Love

it’s time for the 3rd Christian Paper Artists playing card deck collaboration! i’m very glad to have had the chance to participate in all 3 decks. this year, the theme was Love.

here is my submission for the card back design. the group will be voting on the back design soon, so i’m hoping they like mine…

Christian Paper Artists 2008 Love Deck (back submission)

it is my own papercut design.

and here are the 2 cards i did for the deck…

8 of Clubs

Queen of Diamonds - Proverbs 31 Woman

these are also my own papercut designs… combined with a little painting, collage and photo-editing (for text). i used the same frame design for the  Queen as i did for the card back submission. it really is a versatile pattern element. the two looks are very different, even with the same element.

the patterns for the frame, woman, and vase of flowers are all up on my pattern group now, in case anyone is interested in them. i’m planning to get the other elements of the heart design worked into clean patterns and posted soon as well… and i’m considering using that design to work up a tutorial on papercutting.

Ack! I’m Hit!

ok, so i was hit over a week ago… but it is time to wrap up the sock wars saga!

first up, i made a second kill!!

SWIII - SIP#1 Weapon Reload - Finished

i didn’t push as hard this time because i knew that there was no mail memorial day and that meant that receiving on Friday meant the earliest i could hope to mail was Tuesday.

warning, small rantings from my process ahead! this in no way should be taken as negative towards the previous knitter or the game. i just am recording the experience of the moment… not the overall feeling of it all. although frustrating in the process… it was a way of forcing myself to grow my knitting skill – exactly why i signed up in the first place.

this pair was a bit frustrating, because my target didn’t tell me which increase she used. i emailed her and asked (with a link to the Knitting Help.com site), but she just said which ever one was in the pattern was the one she used, ugh. after a bit of experimenting and frogging and experimenting and frogging, i was able to match hers as the lifted bar (M1F) increase knit through the back.

she also didn’t tell me what she did to compensate the stitch pattern on the instep. she used an 8 stitch repeat and notes problems with the stitch pattern on the foot on her project page… but no helpful info. in fact, she didn’t even tell me which round of the pattern she stopped on. so a lot of detective work went into getting started.

she also didn’t get gauge. she had a gauge of 8.5 stitches. i had to try 3 different needles before i zeroed in on her gauge.

she still had the price tag on the ball band, so i know this isn’t cheap yarn… but man! i do NOT like it. it wore a callous across the top of my index finger from holding the yarn tensioned! very rough stuff.

i caught one dropped stitch in the gusset that she must have missed. i laddered it up the 4 or 5 rows it had dropped… but it was tight knitting above it, so i didn’t want to distort the rest of the stitching. i just tacked the stitch down with some spare yarn when i wove in the ends.

oh, and the end that the previous knitter left was under 4” long. :( very annoying to bury.

socks mailed! however, i also found out my assassin mailed the same day too. so much for a third kill… it was fun while it lasted.

i did get a chance to block before mailing.

Sock Wars III - Death Sox

then…. i received my death socks! Thank You Eurekas. after knitting so much blue, the bright colors are fantastic.

see all that tissue paper in the background… she warned me to beware of flying shrapnel! included were great memory wire bracelets with jingle bells (or, as tickled me to no end, anklets! pull the other one, it’s got bells on!!)

Sock Wars III - Death Sox

Mola(Toe)v Socktail!

i am playing in Sock Wars III. i’m having a lot of fun despite the chaos and negativity that is running rampant in the ranks. i’m even enjoying working out the pattern issues.
a fairly simple chevron patterned sock is made very frustrating by lack of clarity in the pattern. two major issues seem to be giving lots of folks troubles…

  1. what type of increase is intended… the description doesn’t seem to match to well with any standard ones… and is not all that clear…
  2. is the increase stitch counted as 1 stitch (the newly made stitch) and then you knit 3 more…. or is the increase stitch counted as 2 stitches (the newly made one plus the completion of the increase) and then 3 more… which means that no one is sure if this is an 8 or 9 stitch repeat.

also, this sock is HUGE. tofutsies at 8 sts to the inch and 72 stitch cast on = 9” unstreched (and VERY stretchy) leg. no allowances are made for changing the circumference. one slouchy sock coming up! poot!

through working my way all the way through the sock, and through looking at the socks others have posted, i believe that the pattern is really meant to be worked as a 9 stitch repeat with a KRL increase. i am essentially using a 8 stitch repeat with a KLL. (ok, just gave myself a giggle at how close KLL looks to KiLL) i like the looks of both ways…

i am definitely planning on making this sock again using a longer leg, tighter gauge and longer toe. i think that depending on increases (a different increase wouldn’t be lacy) this could work very well as a guy sock.
Sock Wars III - Close up streched slightly

End of Day One (friday) looked like this:

Sock Wars III - end of day 1

and day two (saturday):

Sock Wars III - end of day 2

and i stayed up late day 3 (sunday) to finish…

Sock Wars III - Completed

it went into the mail Monday morning at 9:30 am. i know it made the 10 am truck to the routing center in Oakland… so i’m hoping it will be at my target’s door tomorrow! she’s a dead knitter walking!
Sock Wars III - Mola(Toe)v Socktail

included with the killing socks are fizzy bath Bombs and cappuccino wafer cookies Missiles

You make the world go round…

I’m playing in a swap that the Ankh-Morpork Knitters Guild over on Ravelry is hosting…. The Discworld “I’m just sending this box so my partner can have cardboard for their boots and I was guilted into putting stuff in it” Swap. i’ll be posting more about it after i send the box out. but i was just too excited to not share this:

The Discworld Spindle
Discworld Swap - Spindle

(i am growing very attached to this. i need to make another one for me very soon!)

1/4” dowel, cup hook, doorskin disk cut with a hole saw, and polymer clay. i used the doorskin* disk as a base to build the clay on and give it strength.

it spins nicely… thanks to the counterweight continent, lol.

Discworld Swap - Spindle

*(doorskin is a 1/8″ thick plywood used in the making of hollow core doors. it is one of my favorite art materials.)

the new year’s distractions…

well, let’s do some updates of what fiber arts stuff have been happening while i was sick… (yes, i did get some done… but really it’s not like i was doing much of anything else for the last month… so it’s not as impressive as it seems all rolled together like this.)
after all the holiday knitting was done, new projects started up for the new year. (let’s just ignore that huge basket of WIPs, thank you!)

  • Paul’s Inside Out Socks

i started these socks for Paul as my new project for the new year (cast on on new year’s day). the foot is knit with 00 dpns…. with Medium weight STR. very tight gauge. slooooow to work up. i need to keep putting it down for the sake of my hands.

  • Bee Fields Shawl

cast this on as one of my new year’s day cast ons…

originally, the new project for the new year i planned to cast on was the socks for paul. i did cast those on first… but by the evening i was itching to cast this one on and got about 10 rows in before midnight, so it counts, right?

i’ve been excited and wanting to start this since October… but holiday knitting came first.

  • new socks for me – Summer of Love Lace anklets from the BMFA RSC kit:

this is a shot of the lace cuff blocking before the rest of the sock is knit. since then, i’ve gotten past the heel and i’m working my way down the foot of the first sock. these are a fun quick knit… but they aren’t a priority, so they don’t get worked on as much. i need to take new pictures of the progress so far.

    • Yarn Analysis Project

i’m just starting to get to the point where i can reliably make yarn the way i want it when i start out spinning. in an effort to progress with my spinning skill, i’m starting to analyze commercial yarns to see how they are made up and be able to reproduce a similar type finished yarn. i’ve started to collect small samples of all the yarns i have on index cards. i also take a sample of the un-plied (aka deconstructed) yarn so i can look at the single. then i write all the yarns vital info on the card.

    • Baby Surprise Jacket

i wanted to try out making a BSJ with commercial yarn before trying with my handspun… but i’m only a little ways in and i’m thinking of frogging and just going for it with my handspun.

    • White Booties

these are so cute! i don’t know if i’m going to be able to let them go to an actual baby, lol. MINE! handily, my antique toddler doll wears a newborn size…

    • first experiment in handcarding

these you’ve seen already… i’ve continued to card that rope of roving… and now it is all carded and pulled into a few roving bundles. most of it all got blended to a nice consistent color… but the more extreme color sections of the roving i took and blended into a few bolder (but not pink) sections. i went and picked up some more roving in a solid burgundy and a white to practice some more carding with.

    • Baby Hats for a friend’s daughter’s expected Twins

no pictures yet. these are just some simple umbilical cord hats as a start to putting a baby package together for her…

    • Paul’s Fuzzy Feet

no pictures yet, but these are finally off the WIPs pile! one down! how many more added?

    • Paul’s Watchcap for Work

nice, simple, quick… just a work hat for Paul for the cold rainy months. he always said he wasn’t interested in one before… but this Christmas, while i was knitting gifts, he started hinting about cold ears. of course he would get one soon after the holidays were over. and nicer ones for both work (which includes the freedom to trash them) and not work and already planned.

    • felted bowl

another one i’ve neglected to photograph. this was just a quick little something for paul to throw his keys into. it was supposed to sit in his drawer in the secretary… but he keeps pulling it out onto the table so he can throw his keys into it on there. the whole point of the drawer is to keep the table clear!! ugh. but, he just likes it… he wants to see it… *facepalm*

    • Headband

nope, no photos here either. i’ve missed placed it… and besides, it’s hard to take a good picture of the side/back of your own head. this was a simple quick knit. i liked it. i like wearing a nice knit headband. i don’t like the finished headband. too wide when done in the worsted weight the pattern calls for. i think i’m going to make another one of these using a sock yarn instead.

    • Little sky practice socks

these are the first practice sock from Cat Bordhi’s new book. i think they should be just the right size for squishy house socks for my nephew… and they just started enforcing a shoes off in the house policy.

    • Philospher’s House Socks for Paul

one of the patterns from that new book. no pictures of these yet. and no real description either, as these will fill a whole post in a few days. these have been an adventure! but they are going to be such luxury for my sweet Paul. (i’m tempted to try to claim they won’t fit him… should have thought of that before i had him do some fittings, lol!)

Ice Princess

this is my first Soul Collage card. i’ve been wanting to do this process for a long time now, but i never seemed to quite get started. i finally decided to just jump in. i’m fighting an urge to add more and more layers to it because that’s what i usually do with collage art… but on the other hand, this is supposed to be more about the symbolism of the composition… and less about looking the most polished. my head keeps telling me “it’s all there already…” i’ll leave it alone for now and see. i can always add to it later.

i’ve already got a few more cards in the works… but those are definitely not done yet.

Surprises in the Mail

lookie!! lookie!!

this is the package i received on friday.(yes, i’m late posting it… it’s been nuts here. bad jen!)it was from the lovely Patty… who was my spoiliee for SP11. during the SP11 round she had a contest for her blogiversary. she asked for ideas for tag lines for her blog. i couldn’t help coming up with a few… but i stayed anonymous. when she picked winners, she picked one of mine to tie for the winner. she asked for me to send her my address… but again, i stayed mum. well, she didn’t forget! she waited till she got my info in the reveal and surprised me with this!

wonderful stuff! first off, some kool-aid dyed sock yarn! very cool! also a notions pouch and some great lip balm. both eminently useful. all wrapped up in tissue with a pretty green piece of yarn (very soft with a satiny sheen to it… i’m really interested in what that one is too). and a wonderful sheep card! Thank You so much!

and another surprise arrived… this one came with my monthly shipment from the Roving of the Month Club

along with this month’s roving (a beautiful colorway) came a needle felting starter kit (foam block and selection of needles) and a needle felted angel ornament kit. very unexpected and generous!

SP11 Revealed!

i have the bestest secret pal!

this is what arrived today! look! look at all the goodies. first off, notice the teas and the tin of shortbread cookies. mmmmm….

i love tea! and now i’m going to have to give up my coffee soon, so i will really savor these :) (and i’m even going to share the cookies with paul, maybe)

and here it all is…

there’s a bar of nice soap, a knitted washcloth, a 2008 date book, a 3 skeins of Nasua Wolly Stripes, and a bag for my sock knitting!

everything is wonderful! the washcloth is actually the first thing i’ve had knit for me since i was a kid. it surprised me to realize that. i even have other knitters in my family… but nope, i give knits… not usually receive. thank you! i love it.

i am entranced with the colors in the yarn. so vibrant. they have my mind spinning with ideas. oh, why must i wait to cast on any new projects till after the holiday knitting is done??

the datebook couldn’t have come at a better time. for the last 5 or 6 years, my schedule has been so random that i wouldn’t get much use at all out of one. but now, just recently, things have changed that and i’ve gone to having to use one daily. i hadn’t had a chance to get one for 2008 yet… and this one with the impressionist art is lovely!

the sock bag is really nice. so well made. it will be very useful for caring around my WIP socks that go everywhere with me. hanging the bag from the drawstrings will let me work while standing in lines, etc. perfect!

my secret pal, Frieda, has been amazing. she has read my mind and pick such wonderful things for me through the whole swap. (i think she must employ spies… i’m sure she has a dossier on me somewhere!) Thank you so much!!

tenatively flashing my stash…

our SP11 hostess is having a contest and asked everyone to post pics of their stash to their blogs…

wow, i scared myself getting all my stash in one place to photograph. there’s a decent part of me hoping my husband or other relatives don’t see this and figure out how much i really have! it wasn’t all that long ago i had no stash at all! (secret pal swaps and sock club really helped with that!)

click on over to Flickr and mouse over the picture to see LOTS of notes on what’s in there…

this is all my yarns not involved in current projects. some of these are destined for specific projects… but they are on hold till i have time to start them. this stash photo does not include 1. my own handspun 2. or my roving waiting to be spun/felted/etc.

and here’s a pic of how it gets stored away… the box goes into the bedroom and out of sight. the basket is all my sock yarns and lives on top the bookcase in the bedroom… and the 2 yarn cakes sit prettily on the bookcase in the living room. one is inspiration (it’s the next shawl i want to do for myself) and one is convenient for pattern test swatching.
