last Friday, I went into SF and spent the day with Ruth. we made a nice big batch of paste paper. I showed her my “cheat” method. it really does save time over cooking up the paste and all that. I like to be able to just jump in and play when I have the time. she showed me a few combing tricks she had done before that are really making me itch to play again. I had planned to play more when I got home, but hit a wall, energy wise. Later, we stopped by a shop with all the wonderful pigments you could possibly desire… and Ruth picked up some Golden’s glazing medium for making more paste papers later.

I have got to go back to that neighborhood with my digital camera!! oh, I was just surrounded with things I wish I could have photographed. painted ladies. tons of wonderful wrought iron. interesting street scenes. lots of character.

some recent work

from Kristi Scheuler’s color class, which started today…

these were done on 4×6 (postcard) sized watercolor paper I had sitting on hand. hmmm, maybe I should join Donna’s postcard exchange…

i got a chance to work on some art last night. my current item due is preping the book I’m sending out in the newbie RR (I’m replacing a player that went AWOL in the group that was small to begin with). it needs to mail on the 15th, so it’s priority at the moment. I’m doing a Shadow Women theme…

Men stand at center stage,
Spotlighted, examined, scorned or applauded -
Yet women move in the curtained shadows,
Moving, motivating, molding
With words and whispers.
If not for shadow women there would be no play.- Darien Haynes, Reflections

last night I did a basic cover design and sat and ripped out pages to make room in the book for all the artwork they will do… I still need to work up my instructions page, sign in, and a couple starter spreads… but I like the way it’s going so far.

I found my color journal!!! Yipee!!!

ok, so you didn’t know it was missing, lol, but I did. I’ve been searching for it for about 3 months. it’s not a visual journal… just a hard back sketch book filled with clippings from magazines and catalogs that have interesting color pallets, recipes for paste paper pallets and samples of the resulting papers and the waste papers from the left over water, and pages painted with colors and musings on the moods/feelings they evoke for me. it’s been missing for a while now. I’ve been missing it and kicking myself thinking it was gone forever. I’d searched the entire studio. it wasn’t with any of my art stuff anywhere. … because Paul filled it on the bookshelf in the bedroom! ugh.the one time he puts something away! lol.

the timing is perfect too, because I’m taking Kristi Scheuler’s Color Theory class starting may 18th.

it may amaze you that this completely makes my day, lol.

yesterday, Jen W. posted some experimenting she’d done that was inspired by some work by Tara… which inspired me to experiment with this idea myself.

here is my first attempt. it’s in my journal and is not finished yet, but you can see how the technique goes. the gross details are drawn onto a magazine with a black pen, and then they are filled in with gesso… fading out as you go. this is a fun technique and went really smoothly except for the set back that my black pen bleed into my gesso often. my white is less white than I’d like, lol. I need to get some new sharpies and try this again.
