playing with dolls…

so, one of the things I’ve been up to in those few spare moments of time is… playing with a cheap dollar store fashion doll (aka Barbie). I have been drooling over Tricia’s‘s gorgeous dolls for a long time now and wanted to give it a go myself… so far, she’s painted and has her crown. she still needs some more clothes (I’m thinking a skirt of some sort)… but that will take more time, as I 1. am not a very good sewer and 2. have no idea where to find fabric/ribbon/whatever to match what I have going already.

I’m thinking she is growing into a character from Albanlea… I’m almost tempted to write up a bit of a story for her and send her out to others to let them play with her and add to the story…. anyone interested in playing with her?

all aboard the wayback machine….

as we’ve been going through the process of moving, I’ve been coming across bits of art of mine from when I first started discovering I could be creative… these little wire chairs were a big part of my early (in my 20′s) creative play. oh, and the pink and blue one is made with matchsticks and embroidery floss for the seat… painted with nail polish, lol.

this piece is a stone sculpture I was working on in a sculpture class at the community college until I got jury duty and ended up having to drop. it’s been packed away waiting to be finished for about 12 years now. I need to drill the base so I can mount it onto a plexiglass rod on a base… and then finish sanding it to a very high shine. it’s in the state it’s in now because there was no point sanding before drilling… it would just get scratched in the process. it’s soap stone and oh so soft to carve (scratch). click the images to go to the large ones.

when I found the sculpture above, it was in a box with my files, etc… and also all the scrap bits of stone from that carving. the bits are tiny, but I always knew I would find something/sometime to make then into. well, I was overcome with the nostalgia of it all… thinking about the many hours spent in the ceramics/sculpture studio… and I went at it and made this little one. I think it’s going to end up being a focal point in an altoid shrine.

this was the one and only teddy bear I ever sewed. I made him back about 10 years ago when I was just getting re familiar with my sewing machine. he’s far from perfect, but he’s mine, lol. click the image to go to the large one.

Christmas show and tell

this is some of what kept me busy working up to Christmas.

Coasters. I made 2 sets of the first pattern. one was 4 for Helen and the other was 6 for Paul (who loved them and wants more). I made 2 sets of 6 of the second pattern for Paul’s mother and for Tina. I made one set of 4 of the third pattern for Kathy (who Paul had in the gift exchange.)

this is the soldered Christmas ornament I made to commemorate Damon’s first Christmas. he’s 9 mos. old now. the papers I used are scraps from the album I made for him back in june.

these are some of the ornaments I made for Christmas. the first one (angel) I made a dozen of for stocking stuffers and gifts. the other 2 are one of a kinds made from scraps of old projects for Paul.

the first 2 of these monogram pendants have corrugated cardboard from coffee cup holders in them. they are a little thicker because of this, but I love the dimension it gives. I won’t say who they are for because they haven’t been given to the friends yet… the others were for Laura (p’s sis), Erin (my bro’s wife) and Emily (Kareem’s wife).

this “Home” charm has the rings on the side so I can feed it onto one of the spirals of a book I’m planning…

last, but not least, something special for myself. this pendant is now one of my favorite things. the little flowers inside it are tiny flowers Paul picked for me while we were hiking up on the Sobrante Ridge trail. they were too small to carry, so he pressed them into the little notebook he had in his pocket and gave them to me again later when they were dried.
