today we went up to Sebastopol for a cousin’s children’s birthday party. 2 children sharing a party… 7 yr old and 1 yr old.
there were tons of kids and massive chaos. as usual, Paul was in the center of the chaos. in this case, he had help from another adult, cousin Cullen. there was a massive chase/battle with kids taking turns on the guy’s shoulders and everyone armed with light sabers… i was filming a little video from the sidelines and somehow became a target to be chased. hmmm, i do believe it was one of the girls that focused on me, lol. pure chaos!
these are my husband’s cousins, and we don’t get to see them all that often. there are 3 sisters who all recently had babies within a year. they are now 6 mos, 1 yr, and 1 and a half. it is really amazing how much those little ones change between times that we see them. it’s amazing how much our nephew, Damon, changes… and we see him much more often.
as usual, i took handwork along to work on while socializing. all of my current knitting projects are holiday projects… and people who will be receiving them were present at the party… so knitting wasn’t really an option. fine, i was more than happy to have a break and work on a for fun project. i brought my spinning.
as it happens, this fascinated the babies even more so than the adults.
the 6 mo old snuggled and slobbered a goodly chunk of my roving for a half hour or so… holding it and looking at all the vibrant colors.
the 1 year old carried off the rest of the roving in its ziplock bag like it was a stuffed animal. she watched, facinated by the spindle, but kept her distance from the actual action… the soft stuff was plenty interesting.
the 1 and a half year old, on the other hand, had no fear and plenty of curiosity! she came right up and picked the spinning spindle out of the air. held it and looked at the spun yarn. grabbed the yarn and dropped the spindle so that she was supporting it just like i had. she felt it and looked at it and tried to figure out what exactly was happening. adults tried to stop her, but i was able to stop them from disturbing her explorations. eventually (i was continuing to spin away when ever she dropped the yarn or spindle) she reached out and took the roving i had wrapped around my wrist. she sat there and felt the roving while watching me turn it into yarn. i can only imagine what was going through her mind… but the moment was precious.
