Circular Needle Roll – Tutorial

Materials Needed:

  • 2 main body fabric pieces – 13″x22″
  • one piece of quilt batting – 13″x22″
  • one flap fabric piece – 9″x22″
  • 5 pocket fabric pieces – 5″x22″
  • 1/2″ wide double fold bias tape
  • 3 snaps

Step 1:

layer the quilt batting between the 2 main body fabric pieces with the right sides facing outward. i highly suggest pinning this sandwich together in several places through out to prevent shifting of the layers while quilting. using your choice of decorative stitch (or plain, if you prefer) quilt vertical lines into this quilt sandwich. i did not plan placement of my stitching lines… but you may want to for a more grid-like finished appearance. remember that there will be additional lines added at 5 1/2″, 11″ and 16 1/2″ for the pocket seams. i chose to just play using the decorative stitches on my machine and a variegated rayon thread. set aside.

step 2:

fold the flap fabric piece in half, lengthwise right sides together. stitch each short end closed with a 1/2″ seam allowance. turn right side out. press. set aside.
Step 3:

on each of the pocket fabric pieces, fold a 1/2″ hem down on the top lengthwise edge. using a decorative stitch, sew across fastening this hem down. press. set aside.
Step 4:

with a chalk pencil or other removable marking method, mark horizontal lines every 1 1/2″. these are your seam lines. starting at the bottom, layer the first pocket piece so that the right side is facing the quilt sandwich and the sewn top hem is towards the bottom. leaving a 1/2″ seam allowance at the bottom of the pocket flap, sew along the first marked seam line. continue to layer and sew on 3 more pocket flaps in this manner – reserving the last pocket flap. stitch quilting lines across remaining marked seam lines.
Step 5:

press the pockets up so that the right sides face outward. Layer remaining pocket flap with the bottom edge aligned with the bottom edge of the body piece. pin pocket flaps to main body piece to prevent slipping. stitch pocket divider seams vertically at 5 1/2″, 11″ and 16 1/2″ across.

Step 6:

Align open edge of flap piece with the top edge of main body piece. pin in place. sew bias tape edging around all sides of main body piece.

Step 7:

with flap down, fold sides in toward the middle. sew 3 snaps along each folded edge, so that when the roll is folded in half they hold the needle roll securely closed.

Variations:

  • instead of snaps, try sewing on ribbon ties.
  • try altering the pocket dimensions to fit both your circular needles and your straight needles in one roll.
  • using embroidery thread, blanket stitch around a piece of felt to secure it to the front of one of the outer pocket flaps. use this as a place to store your tapestry needles for sewing in yarn ends in your knitting.
